Discover how GWO-certified training at Outreach Rescue prepares technicians for a safe, skilled future in the growing UK wind sector — including Basic Safety Training (BST) and Advanced Rescue Training (ART).
The UK Wind Industry Is Growing Fast — Are You Ready?
The UK is a world leader in wind energy. In 2023, wind generated over 30% of the UK’s electricity, and with government plans to reach 50GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030, the sector is expanding fast.¹
This growth means more jobs — but also more safety responsibilities. As turbines grow taller and sites move further offshore, having the right training is essential.
That’s where Global Wind Organisation (GWO) certification comes in.
What Is GWO?
The Global Wind Organisation is a non-profit founded by wind turbine manufacturers and operators. Its purpose is to reduce risks across the industry through standardised training.
GWO-certified courses ensure that wind technicians are trained to consistent, internationally recognised standards — whether they’re working in the UK or overseas.
Why GWO Training Matters
Working on wind turbines often means:
- Operating at height
- Working in confined spaces
- Performing technical rescues
- Responding to emergencies
- Staying safe in remote locations
GWO standards give technicians the skills to handle these challenges with confidence — from day-to-day operations to worst-case scenarios.
GWO Training at Outreach Rescue, Raglan
At our GWO-certified centre in Raglan, South Wales, Outreach Rescue delivers both Basic Safety Training (BST) and Advanced Rescue Training (ART). These modules are led by experienced instructors using realistic facilities — including the on-site 15 metre training tower, confined space simulator, and rescue equipment used in the field.
GWO Basic Safety Training (BST):
- Working at Height
- Manual Handling
- Fire Awareness
- First Aid
- Sea Survival
GWO Advanced Rescue Training (ART)
For technicians expected to perform rescue operations from wind turbines, the Advanced Rescue Training (ART) modules go beyond the basics. These courses focus on safe, effective rescues from all areas of a turbine — nacelle, hub, tower, and basement.
GWO Advanced Rescue Training Modules:
- Hub, Spinner and Inside Blade Rescue
- Nacelle, Tower and Basement Rescue
Whether you’re working as part of a team or as a single rescuer, ART training helps meet the highest safety standards expected on modern wind farms.
