Description
This 2 day course equips delegates with the key considerations for the planned and unplanned movement and rescue of heavy patients outside of specialist medical facilities.
With increasing numbers of difficult rescues year on year, and the ever-present risks of injuries to rescuers, this course covers best practice in the movement of heavy casualties to minimise risks to rescuers and improve casualty care. This short but comprehensive course equips delegates with the knowledge to identify patients requiring additional care, how to best care for such patients including input on the physiology and associated medical risks present, planning multi-agency responses, comprehensive journey planning and structural considerations. Numerous drills focus on the practical skills of rescuing heavy patients from a variety of common locations, including from small spaces such as a toilet cubicle, from a bath, from a bed, out of a vehicle and then on the movement of such patients through typical households. Delegate will finish the course with a greater knowledge of how to ensure their own safety, and to provide better patient care throughout rescue operations.

Theoretical elements
- This course involves classroom sessions on the physiology of morbidly obese patients, casualty handling considerations, multi agency working & planning, structural considerations, crew welfare and legal requirements involved in Bariatric rescue.
Practical elements
- Practical elements of this course include the introduction and use of specialist and generic equipment including lifting equipment and lifting slings and stretchers, anchor creation and use in residential settings, patient movement both in raising and horizontally and casualty care during movement.
- These skillsets are put to use in a number of drills designed to cover a broad breadth of applicable techniques and situations, which may include rescues from the bath, a toilet cubicle, from having fallen in a hole/ditch, from a vehicle (car/hgv), out of a window, up and down stairways plus more.
- Toe-capped boots are a requirement.
- All specialist equipment is provided.
- All practical elements are holistically assessed throughout the course.
