Search Technician

Goal

To enable delegates to function as operationally competent search technicians (ST) when undertaking duties during operational searches for the location of lost and missing persons.

Target group

Emergency services personnel and individuals from organisations involved in search and rescue (SAR) activities at an operator level.

Description
This 2-day course provides SAR team members with essential skills for lost and missing person searches. Delegates will learn search techniques, spacing, detection vs. recognition, and Missing Person Behaviour. The course also covers information recording, debrief communication, crime scene procedures, and mitigating external influences while ensuring health and safety compliance.
The 2-day Lost & Missing Person Search Technician course equips delegates with essential knowledge and skills to meet the needs of SAR teams deploying to lost and missing person search incidents. Topics covered ensure a competent Search Technicians are able to demonstrate searcher spacing, a practical application of different search techniques, can explain the difference between detection & recognition and how Missing Person Behaviour can influence their search tactics.

In addition, a Search Technician will need to be able to receive and record information relevant to a search and contribute to the passing of critical, correct and relevant information at de-briefs, apply procedures at a potential crime scene and mitigate the effect of outside influences on both themselves and the search incident as part of a comprehensive appropriate to health and safety controls at a missing person search incident.
Compliance

This course, based on the Police Search Governance Board Lost and Missing Persons Search Learning Descriptors and is accredited by the Institute of Search & Technical Rescue.

Previous knowledge

No specific knowledge or experience is required. A foundation level of search and rescue skills (communications, navigation and first aid etc.) would be beneficial.

Requirements

Age 18+. Delegates must be fit for physical training requiring the delegates to move at a moderate pace over difficult terrain and within structures whilst carrying rescue and first aid equipment.

Progression

Successful completion allows entry to: Lost & Missing Person Search Team Leader training.

Theoretical elements

- Classroom sessions cover the theoretical elements of search techniques and practices and prepare candidates for the practical elements of the course.
- A written exam paper confirms learning.
- A post-course training guide is provided for ongoing CPD sessions.

Practical elements

- Over 50% of this course is practically based and includes teaching sessions and scenario-based learning covering search and rescue skills including hasty, open, closed, thorough and vehicle search types, searcher techniques, casualty handling and crime scene management.
- Delegates must come suitably prepared with relevant workwear (uniform if appropriate) to include full-length robust clothing for operating in undergrowth and abrasive environments, robust footwear (work or mountain boots) as well as waterproof clothing and layering for inclement weather, as well as a torch and backpack to remain independent for a minimum of 8 hours.
- PPE is required and can be provided by Outreach Rescue including helmets, gloves and eye protection or delegates can provide their own subject to serviceability.
- The course is holistically assessed throughout.
