Description
This 5-day course is designed for experienced and proficient Mod 3 award holders who wish to train personnel in the skillsets of the Water Rescue Technician (Mod 3). It provides the framework of instructional skills and associated knowledge and understanding to instruct others to this level.
Water Rescue Technician Instructor Training (Mod 3 Level) is a comprehensive and demanding 5-day course aimed at experienced and proficient Mod 3 award holders who aspire to become instructors. This 5-day training course is followed by a consolidation period (of no more than 2 years), and then a 3-day assessment to qualify as a Water Technician Instructor. This training course covers instructional skills, training design, safety considerations, scenario evaluation, and compliance with DEFRA standards. Initially, delegates are equipped with the skillsets to deliver training in the water environment and then are given opportunities to deliver training sessions with constructive feedback. The course covers classroom-based learning and requires delegates to create and present classroom sessions to their peers. Practical teaching sessions are delivered by the delegates across all Mod 3 skill sets, which progress to delegates planning scenario-based training to draw out specific learning points. Delegate are given an action plan at the end of the course to prepare them for the 3-day assessment course, after which they can train others as Water Rescue Technicians and deliver CPD training in all the Mod 3 skillsets.

Previous knowledge

In-date DEFRA Mod 3 compliant award, Advanced First Aid Award compliant with DEFRA Con-Ops Annex F, operational knowledge of operating as a Water Rescue Technician, working knowledge of DEFRA Flood Rescue Concept of Operations.

Requirements

Age 18+. Delegates must be fit for this physically demanding course requiring the ability to demonstrate all Water Rescue Technician (Mod 3) skillsets with a high degree of competence.

Progression

Delegate should attend the Water Rescue Technician Instructor Assessment/Reassessment within 2 years. Completion of this training and subsequent assessment at Outreach Rescue satisfies Module ‘Specialist Rescue Instructor (5087EXQ)’ for the Diploma in Specialist Rescue and is worth 50 credits.

Theoretical elements

- Classroom sessions cover training planning and delivery, the role of instructors, reviewing and assessing, risk assessing, lesson planning, teaching models and legislative considerations.
- Delegates are guided through the production of rescue plans, risk assessments and lesson plans.
- A course manual is issued.
- No summative assessment is conducted as this is purely a training course.

Practical elements

- Practical sessions involve putting the theoretical knowledge into practice, with additional input including; group management, dynamic risk assessing, observing and delivering feedback, rescuing delegates in difficulty, delivering practical teaching sessions to peers, delivering training and assessment scenarios to draw out learning outcomes.
- Specialist equipment is provided. There is no summative assessment, though formative assessments will be conducted and delegates will be debriefed and guided through an action plan on completion.
