Description
This 2-day instructional skills module builds on an experienced Water Rescue Technician Instructors' skillsets in instructing and coaching their delegates in the use of Rescue Craft for Water Rescue operations.
The Rescue Craft Paddling Instructor course is tailored for experienced personnel proficient in rescue paddle craft usage and training delivery. This award moves beyond more traditional instructional methods and focuses on individualised coaching to achieve the desired outcomes. Delegates learn about training hazard and management, group management including backup options, coaching principles, specifics of coaching paddle skills, dealing with delegates in distress and delegate recovery and advanced capsize management. A high standard is demanded of instructors throughout this course, which is assessed holistically throughout. Upon completion, instructors holding this award will be far more competent in delivering Rescue Craft Paddling skills to their delegates, and will have an enhanced coaching knowledge applicable to other instructional avenues they operate in.

In-date DEFRA Mod 3 Instructors Award AND In-date Rescue Craft Paddling Skills Award (issued within 3 years)
Requirements
Age 18+. Delegates must be fit for this physically demanding course involving several hours a day paddling a craft. It is essential to be highly competent in the manoeuvring of Rescue Paddle Craft and an experienced instructor as this course demands high performance throughout.
Progression
Recertification is recommended every 2 years by means of re-attending this course.
Theoretical elements
- Classroom sessions introduce some coaching theory building on existing knowledge.
Practical elements
- This course is predominantly practical, involving coaching sessions from the trainer, and then giving delegates opportunities to coach their peers, requiring selection of venues, activities and instructional and coaching techniques to achieve the desired outcomes.
- All technical equipment can be provided.
- This course is holistically assessed throughout.
