Confined Spaces – Water or Other Industry

High Risk Entry Controller

This unit is for the entry controller/top person who controls entry and arrangements for High Risk confined spaces without entering them. It includes the duties of an entry controller, pre-entry procedures, entry into and exit from the confined space, maintaining communications and initiating and controlling emergency procedures.

There is a 1-day update award for holders of the 6160-03 or the older 6150-03 awards to add entry control capabilities to their existing in-date awards. Please see the data sheets page for further information on the 6160-04APL sheet.

Course Outcomes

  • On successful completion of the course, the student will have demonstrated their competence, knowledge and skills enabling them to meet the City & Guilds requirements to:

         Implement procedures for teams working in confined spaces

         Control safe entry and exit of the confined space

         Monitor the work team to ensure procedures are followed

         Control emergency situations

         Understand health and safety and environmental legislation

         Understand standard protocols for work in confined spaces

         Understand entry controller duties & responsibilities

         Understand equipment checks and testing required

    Additionally, Outreach Rescue ensures the following subjects are covered on this course:

         Identification of Confined Spaces

         Atmospheric monitoring

         Legislative requirements

         Ventilation

         Rescue plans

         Pre-use checks and operation of vertical entry equipment (winches, tripod, harness use, fall arrest devices)

    The following equipment is covered in detail enough so that an entry controller can perform necessary pre-use checks, but would not be qualified to use themselves:

         Emergency breathing apparatus

         Self-contained breathing apparatus

3 days with 24 hours contact time
 

Assessment

Course  content  is  assessed  by  a  combination  of direct observations   of   set   tasks,   question   and   answer, a short answer externally set exam and scenario based assessment. Individual feedback is provided.
 

Certification

This course can be certified by City & Guilds or by Outreach Rescue upon meeting the assessment criteria. For City & Guilds certification, there is an additional fee of £45, and printed certificates are provided. There is no additional fee for digital Outreach Certification, and results are recorded on the Outreach Rescue Database.   

Certification is valid for 3 years.
