Rope Rescue Operator Instructor Training

Goal

To provide the framework of instructional skills and associated knowledge and understanding to instruct others in the skillsets of the Rope Rescue Operator and Safe Work at Heights awards.

Target group

Emergency services personnel and organisational staff interested in delivering and supervising training within the Safe Work at Height and Rope Rescue Operator scope.

Prepares students with the necessary skillsets for a consolidation period prior to returning for the Rope Rescue Operator Instructor Assessment.

Completion of this training and subsequent assessment at Outreach Rescue satisfies module ‘Specialist Rescue Instructor (5087EXQ)’ for the Diploma in Specialist Rescue (50 credits).

Description
This 5-day training programme equips delegates with the skillset to introduce, teach and assess others in the skillsets of the Rope Rescue Operator. This training course should be followed by a consolidation period before submitting for the 3-day assessment to qualify.
The 5-day Rope Rescue Instructor Training is a comprehensive and demanding 5-day course aimed at experienced and proficient Rope Rescue Operators & Supervisors who aspire to train others in the skillsets of the Rope Rescue Operator award. This 5-day training course is followed by a consolidation period (of no more than 2 years), and then a 3-day assessment to qualify as a Rope Rescue Operator Instructor. This training course covers instructional skills, training design, safety considerations, scenario evaluation, and legal compliance with Working at Height. Initially, delegates are equipped with the skillsets to deliver training sessions in Rope Rescue, and then are given opportunities to deliver training sessions with constructive feedback. The course covers classroom-based learning and requires delegates to create and present classroom sessions to their peers. Practical teaching sessions are delivered by the delegates across all Rope Rescue Operator skill sets, which progress to delegates planning scenario-based training to draw out specific learning points. Delegate are given an action plan at the end of the course to prepare them for the 3-day assessment course, after which they can train others as Rope Rescue Operators and deliver CPD training in all the Rope Rescue Operator skillsets.

Previous knowledge

In-date Rope Rescue Operator award (issued within 3 years) OR equivalent award if wanting to transfer to the Outreach Rescue award scheme, contact the office for details.
It is highly recommended to hold the Rope Rescue Supervisor award prior to attending this course. Note the Rope Rescue Supervisor is a pre-requisite prior to attending the subsequent Rope Rescue Operator Instructor Assessment.

Requirements

Age 18+. Delegates must be fit for this physically demanding course requiring the ability to demonstrate all Rope Rescue Technician skillsets with a high degree of competence.

Progression

Delegate should attend the Rope Rescue Operator Instructor Assessment/Reassessment within 2 years. Completion of this training and subsequent assessment at Outreach Rescue satisfies Module ‘Specialist Rescue Instructor (5087EXQ)’ for the Diploma in Specialist Rescue and is worth 50 credits.

Theoretical elements

- Classroom sessions cover training planning and delivery, the role of instructors, reviewing and assessing, risk assessing, lesson planning, teaching models and legislative considerations.
- Delegates are guided through the production of training rescue plans, risk assessments and lesson plans.
- A course manual is issued.
- No summative assessment is conducted as this is purely a training course.

Practical elements

- Practical sessions involve putting the theoretical knowledge into practice, with additional input including; group management, dynamic risk assessing, observing and delivering feedback, rescuing delegates in difficulty, delivering practical teaching sessions to peers, delivering training and assessment scenarios to draw out learning outcomes.
- Specialist equipment is provided.
- There is no summative assessment, though formative assessments will be conducted and delegates will be debriefed and guided through an action plan on completion.
