High-Risk Confined Space Entry Controller

Goal

The aim of this unit is to reflect the national occupational standard for controlling entry and arrangements at a High-Risk Confined Space. This unit covers both the water and non-water industry areas.

Target group

This course is for personnel with no existing Confined Space knowledge who are required to work as entry controllers for work in high-risk Confined Spaces (but not required to enter Confined Spaces)

Highlights

Covers complete entry control knowledge for High Risk Confined Spaces.

The entry controller is never expected to enter a confined space.

Perform PPE checks, log and understand gas monitor readings and make safe decisions for the entry team.

Description
This 3-day course equips delegates to be able to identify and work safely as an entry controller for High-Risk Confined Space work. The course has theoretical input in the classroom and then numerous training scenarios and drills are covered to keep delegates engaged.
This course equips delegates with the knowledge to identify and classify high-risk Confined Spaces (meeting definitions of National Classifications 2 & 3), and to work as entry controllers for work teams working in these environments. Delegates learn the legal requirements of working in Confined Spaces, learn about safe tool and equipment usage, learn about emergency plans, understand standard protocols for high-risk Confined Space entry control, learn about atmospheric hazards and gas monitoring, ventilation methods, checking of self-contained breathing apparatus and emergency breathing apparatus, vertical access techniques involving work at height PPE and winches, and how to record essential details of Confined Space working. This course contains a lot of theory essential for safe working in these environments, and a written test paper is issued to confirm learning. Following completion, delegates will be qualified to work as entry controllers for NC1-4 & 4X high-risk Confined Spaces. Note that this course is very similar to the High-Risk Confined Space Entry award as the entry controller must possess the same knowledge and skills as entrant but is not required to enter the space at any time, and will not be qualified to work as a Confined Space entrant following completion. For High-Risk Confined Space qualified entrants, we can also offer a 1 day top-up course to expand an entrants remit to include entry control (see High-Risk Entry Controller for Existing Entrants).
