Low-Risk Confined Space Entry
Goal
The aim of this unit is to reflect the national occupational standard for a Low-Risk Confined Space environment. This unit covers both the water and non-water industry areas.
Target group
This course is for personnel with no existing Confined Space knowledge who are required to work in a low-risk Confined Space environment.

Description
This 1-day course trains delegates to be able to identify a low-risk Confined Space (National Classification 1), mitigate risks and conduct simple entries into these spaces. Gas monitoring is included.
This course equips delegates with the knowledge to identify and classify a simple Confined Space, to enter safely and follow safe systems of work. Spaces that fall within this classification (National Classification 1, or NC1) are typically shallow enough to not require fall protection, and will not have any reasonably foreseeable specified risks (as set by the Confined Space regs). Delegates learn the legal requirements of working in Confined Spaces, learn about safe tool and equipment usage, learn about emergency planning, understand standard protocols for low-risk Confined Space working, learn about atmospheric hazards and gas monitoring, and how to record their findings. This course does not cover any breathing apparatus or entries requiring work at height equipment (i.e. no harnesses or winches used). Whilst short, this course contains a lot of theory essential for safe working in these environments, and a written test paper is issued to confirm learning. Following completion, delegates will be qualified to work in NC1 and low-risk Confined Spaces.

Previous knowledge
No previous knowledge or experience required.
Requirements
Age 18+. Participants must be fit for basic training involving having to use a short ladder (1.5m at most) and to crouch in an enclosed space.
Progression
Recertification & Refresher training is recommended every 2 years by means of re-attending this course.
Theoretical elements
- This course contains theory classroom sessions cover legal responsibilities, Confined Space classifications, risk assessment and mitigation, atmospheric monitoring and safe systems of work.
- A course manual is issued. A written paper is issued which is assessed.
Practical elements
- The theoretical knowledge is put into play through delegates completing basic work tasks in a number of Low-Risk (NC1) Confined Spaces.
- Toe-capped boots and overalls are a requirement.
- All specialist equipment is provided.
- All practical elements are holistically assessed throughout the course.
